When both forks are sounded together, a clearly audible beat is produced. Rate of beats depends on difference in frequencies. This difference can be increased by changing the loading mass.

A set of 4 metal barriers (reflectors) is included consisting of a pair of straight barriers 150 x 25 mm, a curved barrier of 215mm chord length x 25mm high and a short, straight barrier of 25 x 25 mm.

There is a tightly fitting but adjustable piston on a 390 mm long rod at one end of the glass tube. A loose fitting piston attached to a 1.2 meter long sounding rod at the other end of the glass tube, fitted on a wooden base.
